Actually given people are still driving with the oil price rises oil use isn't that elastic...

I'm sure the British government gets far more per capita from 'gas tax' than the US does, probably more overall too.

    Congrats Apple!!
    Congrats Steve!!!

The more market share, the more vendors will be supporting our platform of choice. :D That's great news!

Let's hope that the OS is as secure as Apple likes to spout off in their ads...

So when everyone buys hybrids and the gas tax revenue dries up we will be forced to pay for how far we drive. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has a suggestion for raising money to fix the nations highways: tax drivers based on how many miles they drive each year.

In a report written in response to a request from Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota), the CBO laments about the shortfall in the federal budgets appropriation for highway maintenance and reckons its time drivers start footing the bill based on how often their foot is on the gas pedal. The driver would be charged according to the number of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) above that which he is allowed under appropriately promulgated guidelines.
The 26-page study is entitled (none to cleverly) Alternative Approaches to Funding Highways and goes into some detail regarding the new tax scheme and the benefits and challenges thereof.

About 25 percent of the nations highways, which carry about 85 percent of all road traffic, are paid for in part by the federal government.... reads the opening line of the paper. In other words, why should the federal government, already so strapped for cash, keeping paying so much for the highway while those who use them get a free ride?http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/congress/6847-cbo-recommends-taxing-drivers-for-miles-traveled

i dont know if it was posted yet but god please put out an iphone with a physical keyboard.

IMHO, adding a physical keyboard will most likely add thickness to the iPhone device & that goes against what Apple are doing. I could be wrong but it seems that one of Apple's main design focus has been to get thinner & thinner with each new revision of the product line. Therefore, I think that Apple will "unfortunately" not be adding a physical keyboard to the iPhone design anytime in the near future. :o

All true... but what happens when you replace the hard drive? Willing to buy one from Apple with the OS preinstalled?

Thats what the USB stick is for - you boot from it like you used to do from DVD and install - that simple.

USB sticks are too expensive and take too much time to duplicate "en masse". DVDs are very cheaper and take few seconds to duplicate if even that since they are being pressed (not burned in the case of mass duplication). USB sticks are also more expensive.

It doesn't make sense to go to a USB only distribution model, at least from a cost basis. As for Mac App Store... meh... why not do downloads outside of the Mac App Store, I don't want to use that POS. I've been installing OSes from HTTP and FTP since the mid-90s, no need for a "Mac App Store" to do it. What happens if I don't have a 10.6 or 10.7 installation going and just want to wipe the computer ? Linux has been doing network installs from nothing. Upon purchase, just provide a USB thumb-drive image I can put on any 1 GB thumb-drive to boot into the installer where I put in my purchase code or something. No need for the "Mac App Store".

Funny how history repeats itself (or better the comments on current events) ... those are the same arguments that I heard when computer manufactures started to get rid of the Floppy drive: but CDs are so much more expensive, I can't get everything on CD, people don't know how to handle them, ....
Also: don't compare the price of big read/writeable USB sticks in the store - with a fixed (read-only) image they can be mass produced fairly cheap - yes DVD might be a tiny bit cheaper for now - but there are other cost savings with the tiny USB sticks compared to the big DVD boxes (packaging, shipping, storage, .... and you save the money to put the DVD drive in the machine)
Lets face it: the DVD is at the end of its life cycle, it was great for its time but now is the time to say good bye.

At this point in time most non-enthusiasts are barely comfortable reinstalling an OS. They'd be totally lost if OS X wasn't on a disc. I'm sure Apple doesn't want to have to deal with all the extra support calls and will provide Lion on DVD for any Mac that has a SuperDrive. DVDs are on their way out but still have a lot of mainstream life in them.

even non-enthusiasts manage to put a USB stick in the right slot. You know, even my father (who does not know anything about computers and sometimes scares me with his very naive computer questions) knows how to put his USB stick in the computer to copy some pictures to it. If he can handle to put a DVD in the drive to boot and reinstall, he can handle to put a USB stick in the right slot to boot and reinstall.

We are still in a transition period. There is zero reason to think 10.7 won't come on DVD. Not everyone -- actually most -- people in the U.S. do not have high speed broadband (4 Mbps or faster) service either because of cost or availability [stats here for the non-believers: http://www.oecd.org/document/54/0,3343,en_2649_34225_38690102_1_1_1_1,00.html] . It would be suicidal for Apple to ship a multi-GB OS only via download. Especially Apple home users, who bought into Apple because of it's ease of use, are not going to sit for hours as their new shiny OS downloads, then sit for another 15-30 min as it installs.

Why? You don't need high speed internet to put a USB stick in your computer, no need to wait for hours, just plug it in and be happy.

You can't boot XP from CD on a Mac. You can't you can't you can't. The Mac boots using EFI, which XP doesn't support.

You need to use Boot Camp to install it, as legacy BIOS emulation has to be loaded specifically for XP.

PLEASE... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.... don't talk if you don't know what you are saying. I'm not perfect... but I can absolutely, ABSOLUTELY guarantee ... GUARANTEE YOU... that you CAN indeed boot XP from the new Macs WITHOUT BOOTCAMP WHATSOEVER.

That is how I have my iMac (24") setup...

The FIRST thing I did when I took her out of the box was insert the WINXP SP2 CD... (nothing slipstreamed)... and hold down the "c" key...

Voila! Booting into XP Setup... COMPLETELY FORMATTED THE ENTIRE 500GB DRIVE with XP... and she runs great.

I then attached an EXTERNAL FW800 RAID 0 Setup (1TB now)... and boot OS X off that external slice...

So... JUST SO YOU KNOW! Please try not to confuse the rest of the class Billy, uhmKay? ;)

I just got off the phone with sale rep, and all they have is 32gb and 64gb left. When asked about the price, she said $500 for 32gb (??). I mentioned the article and she still said $500. Weird? Is there an official link to this somewhere on the verizon site, as all I can see is it bundled with mifi @ 429.99 (16gb).

    $299 is definitely a steal!

Like I mentioned in the first post on this possibility earlier today, I hope they implement this in a way that I can find things. Like tagging my keys or books. I'm always losing crap.

Anyone else thinks that Apple is readying the merger between iOS and MacOSX, at last?

I mean, why would the OSX get sliders instead of buttons (-> finder, etc)? And how would otherwise be the file-sharing in a cloud-centric iOS possible?

    Looking quite forward to it!

What remains to clear how they would deal with the custom Apple ARM vs Intel chipsets programming issue (just as ppc and intel?), programming of apps (.app vs .ipa) ...

Oh, a lot more remains to be clear than that. Like the fact that MacOS X and iOS have completely different UI layers, Window managers, input methods, memory systems, etc.

People often think a few UI elements are all that make up the OS, but there is so much more happening under the hood, and in the way the user interacts with the machine, that it's pretty clear that a merge between desktop and touch-based OSes are a loooong way off, if ever.

    Hi everybody,

at the moment I've got an old non unibody MacBook Pro with an ACD like in the picture below. As apple has switched to the unibody models they started to put a black bezel on the the ACDs and a black keyboard to the MacBooks. What I love about the silver-only-design is, that the content on the screen is much more dominant, the MacBook and the ACD seems to fade away when you are working with them. I just wanted to know what you think about the new vs. old design.

    Regards

    Dave

Well, I will voice my opinion and here it is: I like the unibody screen with the black bezel better. I like the black keyboard and the silver bezel though. :) Now, the black keyboard looks 10 times better than the silver/white keyboard. Just my .25 though.

I am new to Apple and I am not very nostalgic about old Macs. Maybe in a few years I will like the current model more than the future model. What a mouth full!

The iPhone 4 sported twice the RAM of the iPad. Perhaps the iPhone 5 also sports more RAM than the iPad 2.

In fact, maybe that's part of the reason for the push to September. To put more distance between the iPad and the iPhone so that iPad owners don't feel like their product is playing second fiddle to the iPhone (which it is).

I was kind of hoping they'd actually compare with Windows PCs that were, you know, comparable.

Like HP Envy against the MBP, or Sony VIAO Z or Samsung Series 9 against the MBA.

I guess they realized that if they actually do a fair comparison, you won't have enough money left over to go to Hawaii. You might even spend a bit more on the PC.

So instead they compare the MBA against Atom netbooks. "Look, 1.6 is more than 1.4, therefore the Atom chip is better than the Core 2 Duo!"
